Letters from Prison: A Gay American, Sharia Law and Saudi Arabia

When you begin reading my story, you might think that this guy deserved everything that he got, after all he knew what the rules were and seemed to break them with abandon. But when you are born gay, and yes you ARE born that way, you are essentially born illegal. This is the story of a twenty something American gay man who ended up working in a royal hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at the height of the oil boom at the end of the 1970s. Located on the grounds of King Faisal's palace, the showplace medical center catered to members of the Saudi royal family and was a frequent stop for world leaders who flocked to Riyadh to solicit the King's help during the oil crisis. The story, told mostly through letters back home, describes life in sometimes primitive conditions, punctuated with exciting foreign travels and a surprisingly active local gay scene. That is until the clampdown following the Iranian Revolution made life difficult for all of us in the local gay community. Eventually the authorities found their way in the middle of the night to my bedroom, initiating my journey through the opaque sharia justice system. While awaiting trial and a possible death sentence, the day to day life in the overcrowded, un-airconditioned facility is chronicled in nearly daily correspondence with family, friends and the man I loved and was so desperate to see again.
